Manufacturer Case study: CommScope Connectivity UK Ltd

CommScope Connectivity UK Ltd, part of the wider CommScope group, is a manufacturer producing an extensive range of products for use in communications technology systems. With a UK cable production facility based in North Wales manufacturing optical fiber cables, the company has experienced vast growth over the past 10 years to meet the needs of customers around the world.

Ensuring robust and reliable cable performance

The manufacturer strives to remain at the forefront of developing and producing high-performance fiber connectivity, using an extensive mix of materials within their fibre optic cable products. Ranges include drop cables, indoor and outdoor, outside plant cables and optical fiber.

They are continually investing in their Research and Development efforts which involves an evaluation of materials used within their cable constructions to achieve optimised performance, while maintaining high levels of quality and safety in their cable products.

The company works with major European service providers to deliver expertise in cable infrastructure and support the networks of the future.

Michael Livesey, Manager Engineering – Fiber Optic Cable R&D at CommScope comments ‘Our customers expect the highest levels of quality and performance from our cable products, therefore ensuring they are tested by a third party such as BASEC under stringent circumstances ensures we can be confident that they are fit for purpose for installation into complex communication systems. Infrastructures are becoming more heavily reliant on communications technology, meaning reliable, robust cable products are crucial to maintaining strong connectivity.’

Superior service

CommScope has partnered with BASEC for their cable testing and certification needs since 2016, upon the announcement of requirements under the European Construction Products Regulation, known as CPR. This mandatory need applies to all cables placed on the market for use in a fixed installation, whether it is industrial or domestic.

Recognising the need for their cable products to demonstrate fire resistant properties, the company opted for the higher classification AVCP Systems 1+ CPR certificates with BASEC. This involves a thorough inspection of several aspects including plant and factory control, initial type testing on cable samples, the issue of a Classification Report and Certificate of Constancy of Performance, in addition to surveillance checks and continued audit testing. This rigorous examination process ensures that the products and facilities meet the appropriate measures. Going above the minimum requirements provides greater assurance to customers and end users that the cables will not contribute to flame spread in the event of a fire, safeguarding both people and assets.

Michael Livesey comments "BASEC are able to service all of our CPR System 1+ needs which has been a great convenience to our business. This was a key factor in our decision to choose them as our cable testing and certification provider, in addition to being cable specialists and having impressive laboratory facilities. Our customers can be assured that our cable products have been stringently tested to meet the higher CPR classifications of Systems 1+ and are fit for purpose."
