Manufacturer Case Study: Amokabel UK Ltd

Part of the Amokabel group since 2019, Amokabel UK Ltd are a cable manufacturer specialising in fixed wiring cables for installation into public buildings. Amokabel has a production area of 30,000m2 including the head office located in Sweden and a UK facility based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Commercial offices are also situated in Norway and Australia to support supply of cables worldwide.

Within the UK, the cables are supplied to several electrical product stockists and distributors for installation into various building projects from hospitals to colleges, retail stores and heritage sites.

Product Certification

The cable manufacturer’s main product range is the British Manufactured FlexiShield; a multicore screened small power cable designed primarily for power and lighting circuits, where cables are required to be concealed within partitions and building voids. The construction features a Low Smoke Halogen Free sheath to reduce risk of toxic fumes in the event of a fire.

Usability of the cable to ensure a straightforward and efficient installation, coupled with having a smaller diameter, are both key factors that set apart the cable in the market.

The ability to withstand penetration from a sharp metal object is vital for assurance that the cable will continue to perform safely once installed. To evidence capability of this, Amokabel has gained BASEC product approval for FlexiShield in line with requirements to meet standard BS8436. The approval involves a nail penetration test to fail safe at 200amps under nail penetration conditions.

Graham Davies, Director at Amokabel comments:

“Having BASEC approval for our cables is an essential for the business as it without a doubt provides peace of mind to installers that it is fail safe and can be fitted with ease.”

Specific examples include Fife hospital, retail stores such as John Lewis and ASDA, Imperial College London, as well as heritage buildings such as refurbishment projects at Woburn Abbey and Brighton Dome.

Commitment to quality

Focusing on high-quality and innovative cable designs is central to the company vision at Amokabel. In gaining product certifications, in addition to management systems certification for the design, manufacture and supply of Fire Performance Cables for Low Voltage and Signal Applications with BASEC, the company can evidence compliance to the standards. This is demonstrated by undertaking rigorous cable sampling and testing, as well as an independent audit of the company processes. To ensure the levels of quality and safety are maintained an ongoing surveillance schedule is carried out over a three-year period.

Stewart Wiltshire, Managing Director at Amokabel UK Ltd comments:

“The ongoing surveillance required to uphold the BASEC product approval for FlexiShield cables helps us to provide valuable assurance to end users in the supply chain that the product continues to meet the same levels of performance and quality standards.”
