Further investment into BASEC laboratory facilities
BASEC has recently added new state-of-the-art test equipment to our Dubai laboratory to perform the ‘Two Pulley Flexing Test’ for cables.
The test is performed in accordance with the following standards:
- BS EN 50525-2-11:2011
- BS EN 50525-2-21:2011
- BS EN 50525-3-11:2011
- BS EN 50525-3-21:2011
- BS 6004:2012
- BS 6004:2012+A1:2020

What is the test for?
The test is designed to determine whether the materials in a flexible cable can withstand constant flexing under electrical load. Flexible cables attached to appliances are expected to flex many times during their lifetime, and the test confirms if the cable will maintain electrical continuity (with defined voltage and current as per the standard) whilst flexing. The test apparatus features a specially designed rig as determined in the standard EN 50396.
New safety measures met
The two pulley flexing test involves continuous application of voltage and current at the test terminal for approximately 50.5 hours. To mitigate risk, the equipment has been installed within a test cage fitted with electrically and magnetically interlocked doors and is designed to be operated from outside the cage after initial setup. Additionally, a warning light has been installed on top of the cage to indicate active testing when the door is closed.
