MEGGER National Apprentice of the Year Winner Announced

The MEGGER National Apprentice Electrician of the Year 2014 took place in the brand new JTL Centre of Excellence training centre in Birmingham this week.

We are excited to announce this year’s winner as Luke Mayor from Cardiff & Vale College. In second place was Daniel Quittenton from Stephenson College. All the finalists received a cut glass trophy for their efforts and the winner received £1000 worth of Megger tools with his college also receiving Megger tools for their workshops.

Tony Cable, from NICEIC and ELECSA, who designed and judged the competition said, “this year was a real challenge to mark and our first year to have a tie in a regional heat. All the finalists should be extremely proud of their work and to have represented their region”. Assisting with the marking at the final was Darren Staniforth (NICEIC and ELECSA), Jeremy Hodge (BASEC), Simon Wood (from gold sponsor: Megger) and Lee Taylor (from silver sponsor: Click Scolmore). They all commented on how excellent the standard of work was from each of the apprentices.

“As you would expect the standard of work done by the seven regional finalists was exceptional,” said Celia Matthews from SPARKS which has organised the competition since 2009 in association with NICEIC and ELECSA. Celia continues, “Students get a lot out of the competition, they make new friends, gain more confidence in their abilities and enjoy the challenges they are set. The regional heats are exciting but the final certainly shows the competitive side of the entrants – they are all very focused on winning the title, especially with such a fantastic prize at the end!”
