BASEC Judges Sparks Megger National Apprentice Electrician of the Year Finals

03/06/15
In May, Simon Brown, Technical Coordinator at the British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) joined Tony Cable from Certsure and Lee Taylor from CLICK Scolmore to judge the finals of the Megger National Apprentice Electrician of the Year competition.

Hosted at Birmingham Electrical Training in Hockley, seven finalists competed over two days for the National Apprentice Electrician of the Year title. They all received a special cut glass trophy, a certificate of achievement, a number of testers donated by Megger, a range of tools donated by Knipex, and a Stabila spirit level and tape measure.

The winner, Matt Cross from Petroc College in Tiverton, went away with almost £2,000 worth of tools and prizes including a Megger multifunctional tester, Hitachi powertool kit, and Knipex toolbag.

BASEC has been a supporter and judge of the competition since its launch in 2009, supplying BASEC approved cable, on this occasion courtesy of Prysmian Cables and Atom Kablo, for use at each of the six regional heats and the final.

Simon said: “The competition is a fantastic way to encourage excellence among young people across the electrotechnical industry. These young apprentices of today are the project engineer, specifiers, designers and clients of tomorrow. As a certification service for electrical cables we have an important role in the industry to raise awareness among young electricians to specify and install approved cable.”

Simon was also involved in an educational Tech Talk for lecturers between sessions and at the end of the day. The lecturers and students were given an overview of BASEC’s services and its objective to provide advice on the importance of safety, quality and adherence to standards with regard to cables.

Students get a lot out of the competition,” says Celia Matthews, competition organiser. “They make new friends, gain more confidence in their abilities and enjoy the challenge. The regional heats are exciting, but the final certainly shows the competitive side of the entrants… they are all very focused on winning the title.
