New fire and security group wins cable body support

18/01/07

The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) has welcomed the creation of a new group formed to support professional work in the fire and security systems installation industry.

The Electrical Contractors' Association has launched the Fire and Security Association (FSA) as a specialist group to deal with this increasingly important area of work.

The FSA will focus on lobbying, guidance and training to develop and maintain standards, particularly in the light of recent legislation and the Regulatory Fire Safety Reform Order.

Dr Jeremy Hodge, Chief Executive of BASEC, said: "We welcome the formation of this group as a specialist body handling this area of installation work. Installation of cables and equipment is becoming increasingly complex and important.  Installers are often at the forefront of new developments, and a dedicated team will help add focus to it.

"At BASEC, we consider quality and safety to be paramount and it is certainly the case when it comes to the field of fire performance, whether fire alarms, detection or other systems."

The ECA has expertise in the fire sector through its fire and security steering group going back more than 20 years. Its members are engaged in business in this sector estimated to be worth more than £600 million.

New fire safety rules for England and Wales came into force last October and affect all those responsible for buildings, including employers, the self-employed with business premises, charities and voluntary organisations.

The main effect of the changes is a move towards greater emphasis on fire prevention. The legislation covers nearly every type of building, structure and open space except for private homes and individual flats in a block or house.
